Planting - a day of community action and celebration

Join us on Sunday 7 September for Planting – a day of community, connection and culture, taking place at nine locations across Melbourne in the morning, as well as at Fed Square in the afternoon.

Planting is more than putting seedlings in the ground. It’s a shared celebration, offering hands-on opportunities to connect with nature, culture, and each other – and we’d love for you to be part of it.

Participants will learn about restoring environments and take part in meaningful planting activities that support local ecosystems. In partnership with landcare groups, the event invites everyone to contribute to planting native trees and grasses.

Across Australia, environmental volunteers are restoring ecosystems – through weeding, planting, protecting wildlife and more. Planting shines a light on these everyday acts and encourages everyone to take part, regardless of age or experience. By starting at the grassroots, we can nurture a culture of responsibility for the land and waterways into the future.

Can't join the morning plantings? Head to Fed Square in the afternoon for a Wurundjeri smoking ceremony, live music from the Orbweavers, music for plants by Earworthy DJs, sound and art installations from Lichen Kelp, and a host of interactive workshops including seed propagation led by Bili Nursery and gardening talks from Russell Larke, Head Gardener at MAP Co. Find out more about what's happening at Fed Square here.

Planting brings together the creative sector (Creative Climate), environmental stewards (Landcare and Melbourne Water), and place-makers (MAP Co) to pioneer a new kind of partnership – uniting cultural programming with land-based climate care. By planting native species, restoring habitats, and learning from First Nations knowledge holders, participants contribute to a more biodiverse, inclusive, and climate-resilient future.

Planting is commissioned and presented by Fed Square in partnership with Creative Climate. Planting is generously supported by Landcare Victoria, Bupa, and Melbourne Water.
